A few words with Maestro Oscar d'Leon

Between sets, sonero Oscar d'Leon relaxed after a raucous first half at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz. Energetic, dynamic, charismatic - only a few adjectives that describe the incredible performance and personality of Oscar d'Leon, born in Venezuela. Throughout the years, nothing has lapsed in his ability to dazzle audiences with his voice, smile, dancing and energy. To catch him resting up and still able to fit in a brief interview all the more describes the boundless energy of maestro d'Leon.

Uvaldo (Oscar's manager): This show closes his tour of the United States. From here, he’ll head out to Mexico, and then on to Venezuela on the 10th, since the most important theatre in his country will have a tribute for his 30-year career.

Q: I’ll be there. What are the rest of your tour plans?
Oscar d'Leon: Well, we’ll be in Venezuela, at the Teresa Carreno, the most important theatre, celebrating my 30 years in the industry. I’ll be in the company of friends and colleagues such as Arturo Sandoval, Johnny Pacheco, internationally speaking, and national artists such Romero, Mr. Marture, and Quiara, our superb Venezuelan female singer and Vladimir, my great brother. There will also be other musicians, artists and singers. I’ll be traveling through several corners of the musical world, among different musical rythms such as bolero, cha cha cha, tango, Venezuelan music… a little of everything. Mexican music for the public’s enjoyment and for personal pride.

Q: Is this for a few days or just one day?
Oscar: The event will last 6 days, better yet, 7 shows in 4 days.

Q: But you’ll be singing during all of the shows?
Oscar: Yes, ral figure, because I’ll be celebrating 30 years in the business. Therefore we’ll try to make things happen on a positive note, so people can listen, digest and receive the music as we play it and so that it can be carried out to other parts of the world.

Q: Do you plan to record the concert, perhaps a tribute album?
Oscar: Well, everything is ready for recording the show, but not with the intent to record an album. If it comes out with good quality and it’s successful, we just might make something out of it.

Q: Presently, RMM, more or less, does not exist. Is there another company that is interested in working with you to disseminate your music and promote your albums?
Oscar: Yes, I am working in Venezuela. I own a record label, which I opened a year ago, and its first product was Vladrope. Everyone knows that there are some 300 festivals taking place in Europe, and I’ll be taking part in about 30 of them. So, I’ll play 30 shows in 45 days.

Q: That’s a lot! Are there any new projects you are planning with other musicians?
Oscar: Yes, I just recorded a bolero album with Sinfonica, and other famous boleros such as: "Toda una vida estaría contigo" (begins to sing):

No me importa en que forma, ni donde, ni como, pero junto a ti

and songs like "Burbujas de Amor" from our great and renowned Juan Luis Guerra. I’ve also recorded boleros with Los Panchos, such as "Si tu me dices, ven":

With this, I thanked the maestro for his time and left him to rest, just a little, before the next set. It too was 'tremendo delirio' with the crowd shouting for more even with the bands' last song. Hurry back soon, Maestro!
