Rebeca Mauleón appeared at Herbst Hall with the nucleus of her group Round Trip. Her timbalero Orestes Vilató and bassist David Belove had appeared the night before at the Festival with the Machete Ensemble. Mauleón was brilliant as she sang as well as playing piano, sometimes improvising both simultaneously.

Saxophonist David Sanchez, one of the "young lions" of jazz--shown here with drummer Adam Cruz--headlined the Herbst Hall concert. His quintet was joined by a chamber orchestra.
